I had the best time at the Mother's Day breakfast at my son's preschool yesterday. The kids rocked out to "Listen Kissin" by NYC kiddie pop star (and my personal friend) "Moey" while the moms videotaped. And then, the head teacher (who is so fantastic I could write ten additional posts about her) helped the children give out their gifts to us- their sweet clay handprints (sorry for the blurry photo above) with the quote, "Here's a little handprint, just so you can recall, exactly how my fingers looked when I was very small." I teared up right away when S. gave me his handprint and then saw that every other mother was sniffling and wiping her eyes, too. Soon a box of Kleenex was being passed around while the teachers joked that we are all in big trouble when these kids graduate college. And I realized that this is what motherhood is about. We are a bunch of women who are alternately exhausted and overwhelmed by the challenges of motherhood (more challenges for some of us than others), but who literally melt when this simple keepsake reminds us how fleeting this time with our 3-year-old wonders really is.
It is probably the best Mother's Day present I've received in years.
Happy Mother's Day to all of you! I will be enjoying the weekend with my own little ones, and posting again on Monday.
