I find it so heartwarming to meet the people who've taken the time to read
The Find: The Housing Works Book of Decorating With Thrift Shop Objects, Vintage Details. At last Thursday's meet-and-greet at
Luticia Clementine's on the Historic Independence Square, there were already people waiting in the store a half hour before the event even started. I signed more than 100 books...so many that the shop ran out. The stories that people shared -- one from my freshman prom date, another from a second-grade teacher -- touched me, and made me happy that I was able to create a book that so many people enjoy.
One surprise was this box that local artist Patti Pearson made for me. I had never met her before, but she felt compelled to make this lovely object crafted from clippings she found in the
Kansas City Star review of
The Find, then glued them to a decorated box, and created textured relief on the book cover.
So special and so beautiful. It is truly an object of my desire!
