Bargain Alert: Halloween Notecards

Halloween notecards are one of my favorite (calorie-free) seasonal treats. I stumbled onto the Etsy shop Two Poodle Press which has some cool, vintage-y Halloween notecards at very low prices. I ordered the Vintage-Inspired Pumpkin Trick or Treat Halloween Greeting Cards- Charley (10 cards for $7.65) shown above for myself to use as birthday thank you notes. I asked Two Poodle Press to change the text from "trick or treat!" to "halloween, baby!" and they turned out adorable. These will actually make me look forward to writing thank-you notes. I also really like the Vintage-Inspired Pumpkin Trick-Or-Treat Halloween Greeting Cards (10 cards for just $6). If you love both Halloween and stationery as much as I do, how you can resist stationery this sweet at this cost? Browse some more at Two Poodle Press.

Bargain Alert: Woman's Day Magazine

I got this deal from one of my favorite Twitter feeds, Moms Who Save. It's a $4.39 one-year subscription to Woman's Day Magazine. I've sung the praises of this magazine before; while it's a publication I probably would have scoffed at 10 years ago (my tastes ran more Cosmo than Woman's Day at that time), I now enjoy reading it for helpful tips on parenting, working, decorating and more. The current issue (shown at right) has some terrific, easy Halloween decor ideas (way easier than Martha Stewart). Woman's Day is a bit like Real Simple but without the perfectionism (I cancelled my subscription to Real Simple when I felt too stressed that I did not have the 10 "must have" wardrobe staples they listed each year). I highly recommend Woman's Day and this is a great opportunity to buy a subscription for mere dollars (bonus- it is published 15, not 12, times a year). Visit this link to purchase a subscription, but hurry. The offer expires at midnight tonight.

Bargain Alert: Designer Watches at Totsy

Alert the media. I just bought myself my first new watch in ten years. And I got it for free (sort of). I bought it at a flash sale at Totsy, where I had earned enough referral credits to purchase this Invicta Wildflower Cystal Accent Two-Tone Watch (on sale at Totsy for $59, retails for $495) for absolutely nothing (well, just $7.95 shipping). How 'bout that? I can't do the math quickly, but that is, um, a huge discount. See, it pays to be an expert online shopper. I have very classic, simple taste when it comes to watches (most jewelry, in fact) so I am excited for my new watch- made of stainless steel with 18k gold-plated accents and white Austrian crystals- to arrive. The designer watch event actually ends today at Totsy so hurry over for more huge deals; if you aren't able to access Totsy through any of these links you probaby aren't a member yet; use this link for an instant invitation code to join and start shopping right away.

Bargain Alert: Amazon Mom

I've sung the praises of my Amazon Prime membership here many times before (a $79 yearly membership gives you unlimited free 2-day shipping on thousands of items), but I think the new Amazon Mom membership program may be an even better deal, particularly if your kids are still in diapers. Basically, Amazon Mom is a free 3-month trial of Amazon Prime (well-timed for holiday shopping), aimed at families with babies and toddlers (you don't actually have to be a mom to join). If you join the program (remember, it's free), you'll get free two-day shipping and up to 30% off diapers and wipes, which if I remember correctly are the most frequent and costly purchase during those first few years. So that will add up to lots of savings over three months. And if free two-day shipping isn't fast enough for you, you can upgrade to one-day shipping for $3.99 a purchase. Amazon Mom members will also get exclusive discounts tailored to their family if they choose to provide their child's name, gender and birthday, though this is entirely optional. And what happens when those 3 free months are up? Well, for each $25 you've spent within a single order from Amazon's Baby Store, you'll get an additional month Amazon Prime shipping benefits for up to one year. It's as pretty good deal. Interested? Sign up for a free Amazon Mom membership here; you can cancel or opt-out at any time. If you sign up, let me know how it goes.

Grandma Goes Shopping

My mom recently hit some outlet stores (Carter's, Osh Kosh, and Children's Place) and came back with lots of Fall basics for the kids (socks, tights, tees, etc.) Which is a good thing, since both kids had growth spurts this summer and even their socks barely fit (can you believe that both my 7-year-old girl and her 4-year-old brother wear a size 1 shoe?) I'm thrilled with everything Grandma bought, but I think that R. will like this purchase the best- a Faux-Layer Houndstooth Dress from The Children's Place's new "Plaid to Rock" collection. It's actually only available online or in the outlet stores (not in-store), so snap it up fast (it's available in black, too) at ChildrensPlace.com ($14.98 in sizes 4-14).

Thanks for the goodies, Grandma!

Psst! I've got one online coupon code left for 15% off your entire purchase at ChildrensPlace.com, valid now through August 28th. Want it? E-mail me with "Children's Place" in the subject line, and I'll send it to the 1st person to respond. Enjoy!

Bargain Alert: Lillian Vernon Kids' School Box

These new personalized "school boxes" caught my eye in the latest Lillian Vernon catalog. While they don't contain everything that even my 2nd grader needs, they are a fun add-on gift or back-to-school treat for any young student. The sturdy hardboard box with elastic loop closure contains lots of goodies like mini colored pencils, a glue stick, rounded safety scissors, an eraser, and a 2-in1 stencil with ruler. And, as with most kids' products at Lillian Vernon, personalization is free. It's a bargain at $6.49 (was $12.98) so stock up on a few for birthday gifts, or even holiday gifts far in advance.

Psst! Enjoy Back to School Savings at Lillian Vernon; get 10% off orders of $40+, or 15% off orders of $50+ with code "720850100". Offer expires August 31st.

Right on Target

New York City frugalistas like me rejoice this weekend with the opening of Manhattan's very first Target, on East 116th Street in East Harlem. Sure, we have Fifth Avenue with Tiffany's, Cartier, and Prada. But this is much more my kind of place. I'll probably wait a bit to check it out in person- I imagine it will be mobbed this weekend- but you can see some fantastic preview photos posted at Racked a few days ago. It looks swell, doesn't it?

Bargain Alert: Lands End Wedge Beach Slide Shoes

I am fussy about beach sandals/flip-flops. I find most of them very uncomfortable (particularly those with toe thongs). But I bought a super pair of Women's Wedge Beach Slide Shoes last year from Lands End and I see that now they are now on sale. They have a cushiony EVA insole/footbed and I have been equally comfortable wearing them on the beach or on NYC pavements. My favorite color combo- the jaunty yellow sandal with nautical navy stripes- is available in the most sizes (whole sizes 8 through 11) and costs just $9.99 (was originally $19.50). Several other colors/sizes are available, too. Hurry and buy them for next summer (or as a treat to replace this summer's pair) at Lands End.

Bargain Alert: Totsy.com

You already know that I am a big fan of members-only "flash sample sale" sites like Zulily and The Mini Social. There is a 3rd site I want to tell you about, which offers moms (and expectant moms) up to 70% off on products for kids ages 0-7, including baby gear, travel accessories, educational toys, and designer clothing. It's called Totsy and I think you will love it. It has some pretty awesome sales on top products that aren't easy to find everywhere. Each sale lasts for 48-72 hours and I wanted to bring two to your attention that are taking place right now. I'll be purchasing from them myself, for sur.

Sage Creek Organics clothing proves that organic clothing can be colorful, comfortable, and affordable. I adore Totsy's selection of their toddler/kids' playwear (I only wish it went past size 6X for girls; but I'll console myself with a shirt or two or S.) These are great back-to-school pieces, and every one is 100% certifified organic cotton. Clockwise from top left: Pacific Blue Iverson Rugby Polo (reduced to $15 from $29); Jenna V-Neck Bow Top in Poppy Red Stripe (reduced to $12 from $25); Poppy Red Solid Leggings (reduced to $8.50 from $16); and Jet Blue Corduroy Pants (reduced to $17 from $36);

The 2nd sale I must tell you about is for Soft Clothing, which I first heard about from one of my son's Early Intervention therapists. Now I am starting to read about Soft Clothing everywhere, with good reason- it is a very smart idea. Basically it's clothing that has been "tested" and approved as being comfortable to wear by kids with sensory sensitivites (which includes many children with various special needs). So everything is tagless, has flat seams, and soft elastic waists. Nothing that makes a sensory-sensitive kid scream when you try to wrangle it on. If this rings a bell with you and your child, you should check it out. The clothes are cute and go up to size 7/8 (thank you!!!)

Girls' Soft Party Dresses (in gold, white, or raspberry), reduced to $13.20 from $24.

Soft Whale Print Shorts, reduced to $13.50 from $27.

Soft Suspender Tee, reduced to $10.45 from $19

To purchase from Totsy, you must be a member. Not a member yet? No problem! Click here for an invitation link. As a member, you'll get perks like account credits when you refer friends, and advance notice of sales. And one more thing: with every Totsy purchase you make, they plant a tree in the name of your child to help reduce the effects of deforestation. Nothing like feel-good shopping, right? Visit Totsy.com.

Bargain Alert: Monogrammed Birthstone Necklace

If you subscribe by e-mail to Red Envelope, you'll get announcements of special one-day deals every Thursday. Today's deal caught my eye; it's a monogrammed birthstone necklace that has been reduced from $99.95 to just $29.99 (that's 70% off). Inspired by wax seal monograms, each sterling pendant is surrounded with faceted gemstones and hangs from an adjustable lobster clasp chain. If you don't fancy your particular birthstone, feel free to choose another (April's "white sapphire" could pass for diamonds, you know). Buy it for a mom, sister, best friend or yourself at Red Envelope.
