Hugs and Kisses at School

Oh, I love these "Ruby" shoes from See Kai Run. Super cute for a first day of preschool. The red leather rubber-soled shoes have black piping and straps with hook-and-loop velcro closure. Insanely adorable. Sizes 3-9, $40 at See Kai Run.

Playtime New York Roundup: Part 1

Two weeks ago, I paid a quick visit to the New York debut of international trade show Playtime. It was a pretty awesome display of new (and relatively new) designers of kids' apparel, accesories, toys, and even maternity wear. Held in a beautiful Soho loft space at 82 Mercer Street, it had a very cool vibe. I'm still sorting through all my finds and photos, but here are just a few to whet your appetite:

bakker made with love is a French designer exhibiting in New York for the first time. The teeny-tiny infant clothes are TDF (the skinny jeans! the blazer! the silk dresses!). The French sure do know how to dress children. Not for sale yet in the U.S.

Cute country gingham sneaks by Bensimon. Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks of Kelly Bensimon when I see that name.

Maternity dresses by Fragile, a Belgian brand. Why didn't they have this stuff when I was pregnant? I lived in cheap separates from Old Navy maternity.

Whimsical soft toys by Moulin Roty, another French import. Their website is every bit as sweet as their products.

This one is great. Big Head Baby is exactly what you'd expect- baby clothing with extra snaps and "give" to accommodate the heads of larger babies. My son's head was enormous as an infant and this would've been great. Designed by an aunt who saw the need for this while dressing her (big-headed) nephew after his bath!

More to come soon from Playtime New York!

Mr. Argyle

I've bought S. some cute shoes from Gymboree in the past; while they aren't super great quality for everyday shoes, they are fun for special occasions or to match a particular outfit. When these catchy Argyle Slip-On Sneakers ($20, sizes 9-2) go on sale further, I'll probably scoop up a pair for him. Check out the new Rock 'n Roll 101 boys' clothing collection if you want to see the matching outfits.

Trend Alert: Colorblock Shoes

I saw this photo on Just Jared yesterday. Jessica Seinfeld hosted a party at the Balenciaga store in East Hampton, NY to benefit her charity Baby Buggy (which is a fantastic organization, by the way). More interesting than the star power here is....those shoes! Jessica's and Gwyneth's, I mean (the third lady in the photo- on the right- is still working the tiresome gladiator trend, which I never understood to begin with). Are "colorblock" shoes the next big thing? Ever since I saw The September Issue where Vogue's creative director Grace Coddington rocked a colorblock photo shoot, I have adored this fashion trend. You'll find lots of colorblock-style garments, by the way, in the Boden catalog (like this Colourblock Milano Coat). But I haven't seen colorblock shoes before. Me likey. Though I'm guessing these shoes are priced wayyyy beyond what I ever would (or could) spend. I'll investigate the knockoffs...

What do you think of Jessica's and Gwyneth's shoes in this photo? And, let's be a little catty...what do you think of Gwyneth in this photo? Her pose, her dress, etc.? I think I'd rather be friends with Jessica.

Bargain Alert: One Ruby Lane sandals at Zulily

Speaking of summer shoes, Zulily has a winner sale of One Ruby Lane girls' summer sandals, which are the ultimate in girly footwear. There's pink, sparkles, butterflies, and hearts galore. Zulily's last sale of this brand was so popular that they are repeating it now- but hurry, the sale ends on Friday, July 23rd. My favorite pair is shown at left: "Olivia" sandals reduced to $21.99 from $48, sizes 8-13 remaining. Buy them at Zulily.

Bargain Alert: Lands End Wedge Beach Slide Shoes

I am fussy about beach sandals/flip-flops. I find most of them very uncomfortable (particularly those with toe thongs). But I bought a super pair of Women's Wedge Beach Slide Shoes last year from Lands End and I see that now they are now on sale. They have a cushiony EVA insole/footbed and I have been equally comfortable wearing them on the beach or on NYC pavements. My favorite color combo- the jaunty yellow sandal with nautical navy stripes- is available in the most sizes (whole sizes 8 through 11) and costs just $9.99 (was originally $19.50). Several other colors/sizes are available, too. Hurry and buy them for next summer (or as a treat to replace this summer's pair) at Lands End.

It's a Boy, It's a Girl, IsaBooties

Is there anything cuter than tiny baby shoes? Not really. Now through Thursday, July 15th, all pairs of soft-soled baby shoes at our affiliate IsaBooties are just $20 (reduced from their regular $29 price). IsaBooties are known for their trademark soft soles, 100% animal free materials, and easy slip-on designs. My favorite pair is the Pink Tulip Toes ($20, sizes 3mos-24mos). These baby booties make a thoughtful gift (and welcome change from the dozens of onesies new parents receive). I've always liked that IsaBooties' site has a selection of Barefoot Books, too, so you can shop at the same time for a sibling gift. Plus, their standard (free) gift wrapping is pretty nice- your gift is wrapped in 100% recycled brown kraft wrapping paper and tied with a purple grosgrain ribbon along with your gift message. Check out all the goods at IsaBooties .

Enjoy $20 pricing on all shoes (no coupon code needed) at IsaBooties, today and tomorrow (July 15th).

Off To Camp She Goes

S. has started camp already, but R.'s first day is not till next Tuesday. It's a sports camp, so she needs some practical clothing and gear, but still wants everything "girly" (quite a change from 2 summers ago when she eschewed princesses for knights...). Here are some new purchases:

Geox Kids Mimosa Sneaker (on sale for $49.50 at Zappos.com, reduced from $55). Geox really should pay R. for her brand loyalty. She won't look at any others.

New York Mets Pink Tie-Dye Cap ($14.99 at Dunham's Sports). Her little bro has a coordinating one in solid blue.

Flower Tunic & Capri Set by Flapdoodles. On sale for $26.99 (regularly $34.00) at CWD Kids. No dresses allowed at sports camp- she agreed to settle for this.

Disney Princess Large Backpack ($24.50 at Amazon.com). Her 1st grade backpack- which is nearly identical- is quite banged up. This one will take her through the summer and hopefully into 2nd grade, too.

And....I must write a separate post about Mabel's Labels, which has saved me hours of time of camp preparation for both kids. More on them later this week.

Dylan & Harry

After dinner in the picturesque West Village on a recent Saturday evening, I spotted this new (to me) store Dylan and Harry on Bleecker Street. It carries "smart, chic and playful looks for children ages newborn to 10 years" and includes items by Saint-James, Salt Water Sandals, Stella Cove Swim, and Naef toys. From the window displays (the store was closed for the night) it reminded me a bit of Jacadi-meets-Villebrequin. The prices are high, for sure (boys' swimwear goes up to $95). Still, a fun shop to browse if you're in the neighborhood- or if you want to check out the wares online.

Red Mary Janes

Perhaps inspired by my daughter's first performance in a school musical last night (she was an orphan in "Annie"), I just bought her first pair of red Mary Janes from members-only flash sale site Zulily. I've always wanted to buy her shoes like these (they will look so cute with her navy and white school uniform) and the price couldn't be beat, especially with the coupon code (see below). The shoes are the Red Lola Mary Janes (Zulily price $24.99; originally $46; sizes 11-3) by One Ruby Lane. All of the One Ruby Lane shoes are adorable; check them out here where you can buy them through May 17th.

Enjoy $10 off any order over $30 at Zulily for a limited time only with code "YOUNG10".

Need an invitation to join Zulily? E-mail me with "Zulily" in the subject line.
